Cashflow lending

When timing creates pressure for a business.

Cash flow lending discussions often start when stock, wages, tax, supplier payments, or debtor timing create a temporary funding gap.

Short-term funding still needs a clear repayment plan.

The important questions are how much the business needs and when it can repay it.

When cashflow lending fits: common triggers and scenarios

Cashflow lending uses expected business income rather than physical assets as the main basis for finance. It may suit an established New Zealand business with steady revenue, but it is not suitable for every application.

Common reasons include a seasonal gap between income and expenses, buying stock 60 to 90 days before a large customer pays, hiring specialist equipment for a short project, or covering an unexpected repair or supplier demand.

Lenders often look for 12 to 24 months of trading history, stable or growing revenue, a repeatable income model and a DSCR of at least 1.2 times on the proposed repayments. Modest losses during a growth phase may be acceptable, but ongoing negative cash flow is a concern.

Start-ups without trading history, businesses with highly unpredictable revenue and funding needs above roughly 50% to 60% of projected annual cash flow are less likely to fit this type of lending.

Documents for a cashflow lending application

A complete application helps the lender understand how money comes into the business and how the new debt will be repaid. Requirements vary, but most applications start with financial statements, current management accounts and a 12-month cashflow forecast.

Provide six to twelve months of business bank statements for the main operating account. If you use separate GST, payroll or savings accounts, the lender may ask for those as well. It will review deposits, withdrawals and overdraft use.

Prepare a schedule of your five to ten largest customers and the share of revenue each represents. Relevant contracts, recurring invoices and customer-retention information can support the income story. A single customer contributing more than 40% of revenue may be treated as concentration risk.

Include company registration documents and personal financial statements for directors or guarantors who own 20% or more of the business. A short summary should explain the funding purpose, repayment plan and expected business benefit.

Depending on the facility, the lender may also request the last six to eight GST returns, IRD tax certificates and a current payout figure for any debt being refinanced.

Invoice financing or term lending: what is the difference

Invoice financing and term lending both provide business credit, but they solve different cashflow problems. The better fit depends on whether the need is a short gap between invoicing and payment or a defined capital purchase.

With invoice financing, the lender advances part of an unpaid invoice, often 70% to 85% of its value. The customer normally repays the facility when the invoice is settled, often within 30 to 60 days. Interest is charged on the drawn amount and service fees may apply.

Term lending provides a lump sum that is repaid over a fixed period, commonly one to five years. It suits equipment, renovations, a partner buy-out or another defined need that lasts longer than an invoice cycle. The business pays principal and interest on a regular schedule.

Invoice facilities are revolving and secured against the debtor ledger. Term loans may be secured against business assets or supported by a director guarantee. Invoice finance is less suited to long payment cycles, concentrated customers or a small number of very large invoices.

Some businesses use both: a term loan for a capital purchase and an invoice facility for working capital. Compare the fees, security and repayment timing for the actual situation.
